Housing and Homeownership Within the Fort Belknap Indian Community: Survey Findings and Discussion
Montana Native Growth Fund
Sweet Grass partnered with Montana Native Growth Fund, the Fort Belknap Tribal Housing Authority, and Island Mountain Development Group to conduct a comprehensive housing needs assessment for the Fort Belknap Indian Community. Through surveys and community input, the assessment documented current housing conditions, demand for new homes, and barriers to homeownership. Findings revealed that while the majority of community members want to own their own home, limited housing supply and lack of access to capital remain significant challenges. The study also highlighted the strong connection between housing, economic growth, and cultural vitality — showing that quality homes are essential to retaining skilled workers, supporting local enterprises, and strengthening Aaniiih and Nakoda traditions. This work provides a roadmap for expanding homeownership opportunities and creating sustainable economic and community development at Fort Belknap.
